Global Warming

After watching the movie, "An Inconvenient Truth" answer the following questions:

1.  Do you think the movie was accurate, or do you think it was propaganda? Why?

2.  List one thing that a person could do on an everyday basis to slow Global Warming.

Explain how it would help the environment.  (Ideas can not be repeated)

3.  Do you think Global Warming is a political issue?  Why or why not?

Write a summary of the movie AND answer the following questions:

1.  What is the message of the movie?

2.  What is the purpose of the movie?

3.  In the movie, what is the cause of this disaster?  (Be specific - what events led to this happening)

4.  How realistic is the movie?

5.  How did you feel about the movie?

I think that the movie was accurate, although I have no way of truly knowing the credibility of some of the more more shocking statistics-- such as those concerning the thickness of the arctic icecap.

Of course the movie was propacanda! Gore obviously is trying to spread information, which is all that propaganda essentially is.

A person could carpool or use public transportation for their daily commute. Doing this would decrease carbon emissions by reducing the number of vehicles on the road each day.

Global warming is a political issue simply because much of the issue's outcome is dependent on what actions the world's political leaders take.

--Dane

I agree with Danes opinion on global warming being a political issue. It does involve the political leaders.

-Jessica-

I agree because it is political in ways because most of what our country does depends on the political leaders and their actions.

~Candice

I do think the movie did have some accurate points about global warming but it was mostly propaganda. I think he exaggerated on many things in the video for example how Antarctica is decreasing massively.

One thing you could do to change the environment is move your thermostat down 2° in the winter, and in the summer move it up 2°.You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Global warming I believe is a political issue because usually problems like global warming involve the political leaders.

I think this documentary was pretty accurate. Althought, it is hard to tell what is accurate and what is propanganda these days but I believed some of it. But some of it did sound a little over exaggerated like maybe some of the statistics and the ice caps, like Dane said. In my opinion, I think maybe just switching and driving a different car would be more healthy for the environment. Like switching to a more energy efficient vehicle that could save from giving off so much fumes into the air. Yes and no, because the people in the world concerned with global warming can do stuff about it instead of just sitting back and doing nothing; they could be switching lightbulbs or using a energy efficient vehicle or just trying to stop pollution. On the other hand, it is also a political issue just simply because most of what we decide to do as a country comes from the political leader and that includes the issues on global warming and what we can do to help prevent it.

~Candice~

Regarding with what you said about switching over to a fuel efficient car - Why do people switch? I believe to save money, not to save the planet. So when they get there new car, they can go farther on the same gas. Farther = more trips = more pollution, its just a perverse incentive to save on gas.   ~~~~~~~~~~~NICK K.

I think that the movie had some interesting points. It was a good way of getting information out in the open. I do think it was too one sided, But i guess that was the point. One thing that someone could do to help the situation is to switch to energy efficient appliances. "If each household in the U.S. replaced its existing appliances with the most efficient models available, we’d eliminate 175 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year!" I believe that Global Warming should be an issue to EVERYONE. Being in polotics should not exclude you from caring about the enviorment and wanting a better life for future generations. People who are in polotics should care MORE becuase they are choosing to help the country. If you take on role of President then you are saying that you are trying to take on ALL the problems. You dont get to pick and choose. And to normal people, they should care also becuase it effects the future of THEIR family. They shouldnt rely on other people to worry about it, Because they won't.

Yes, I think that the movie was accurate all he was doing was stating facts and making comparisons. I thought the movie was all pretty good except for the part about him running for president wasn’t needed.

You can Recycle more often. If you recycle 50% of your glass, aluminum, plastic, cardboard and newspapers that will equal 2,400 pounds of CO2 savings per year.

Yes I think that global warming is a political issue because many of the solutions to global warming depend on large companies spending lots of money to up date their factories.

The movie was pretty accurate, although Al Gore got a little off topic by bringing family matters into the discussion But then again I understand why he did. I think what he was trying to get across. It was that life is precious even if it’s a little problem in the family or a large problem such as Global warming.

One thing a person can do on an every day basis to slow down Global warming is too maybe try and use a different type of gas for your cars such as ethanol because it’s not using gasoline and its not admitting as much admissions to the air. Global warming is definitely a political issue. Sure we have riots, rally’s, and protests against Global warming but that’s about all we can do. It don’t matter who you are at the end of the day the government has the last say. For example the government decides who we trade with, who we allow to come into the United states and taxes.

Kayla

Im sorry to say but I support your idea of using ethonal but in fact 1 gallon of E85 or what we call ethonal still has 15% fossil fuel gasoline in it.

 -Collin-

I hate to say say, but it all we can do is riot and protest against Global Warming? It sounds like were being controlled by the government! We as a society make a huge difference against to lower emmisions in the air, just look at all the examples our class gave... ~~~~~~~~NICK K.

I thought the movie was accurate in most phases, but I have nothing to go off of having no prior knowledge of global warming, and having no way to check the accuracy of some of the statistics shown in the movie. The movie is propaganda, but in a good form because the danger of global warming should be spread and there is no better way than through propaganda.

If people want to help fight against global warming on a daily basis, they could simply pull out there bike and ride that to a friends house that is just down the street or to the store. If everyone just rode their bikes short distances instead of starting up their cars it would help out a lot.

I think global warming is a political issue and should be because the only people that can do something drastic regarding global warming is the government.

Nick W

I believe that the movie was very accurate. “An Inconvenient Truth” was able to explain the contemporary understanding of global warming in an understandable manner, while at the same time presenting defendable and, assumingly, reliable facts. All facts presented in the film are accompanied by a source that can be checked by any person. Unfortunately, the film only presents one side of the global warming issue. In order to fully comprehend a crisis, both sides of the story must be heard, so an effective solution can be derived.

Switching all lightbulbs in the house to compact fluorescent light bulbs (cfl) can reduce a families carbon dioxide output by 300 pounds a year. If every family in the U.S. were to switch to cfls, carbon emissions could be reduced by 90 billion pounds.

Global warming is without a doubt, a political issue. It has the power to effect every person, animal, and ecosystem on the planet and holds the future in jeopardy. Environmental issues have been a part of politics in the past, but now more than ever, the urgency to make a difference on global warming is apparent. It should be one of the most important issues on the upcoming ballot.

Patrick?

I think the movie was accurate. It's based on hard facts and those facts are undeniable, and startling.Though some facts were delivered in a more dramatic fashion that seemed a little unnecessary, it still seemed to me like there was no doubting.

People can help fight global warming on a daily basis by buying organic foods rather than the foods that have been treated lots with pesticides and herbicides that run off into the environment and cause damage to ecosystems that are vital to the world.

Global warming is a worldwide issue that the politicians, that we're supposed to look at for help, refuse to recognize. They make promises to help with things such as global warming and healthcare but that won't be a problem more and more new diseases come out of the works due to global warming. They spend most of their time working on getting re-elected and focusing on themselves that they never focus on important world issues.Just because some things are a direct threat to the American Nation and not the whole world makes them a bigger deal because we're better than everyone else. therefore since the politicians have cunningly designed a bubble over th U.S. that blocks out global warming they view it as a way to get rid of everyone else.

-John

John’s recommendation to fix global warming is so very wrong. Actually I couldn't find how pesticides would contribute to global warming they don’t produce green house gases!!! Even though pesticides might pollute they produce bigger and better crops, and this is what we will need because in fact the worlds population is rising at thousands a day and with less and less farm land we will need to produce more food on less land and that’s hard to do. But with the help of pesticides and herbicides we can do that and if we put these chemicals on the earth correctly then we can save the environment to. Also to add to this buying organic food contributes to global warming because that food most likely came from California or from far away and has to use tons of fuel to get it to your store. If everyone would buy local produce from our local farmers markets then all the pollution produced by transportation of that organic crap can be eliminated and you are also helping our local economy to. So buy local produced foods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that "An Inconvenient Truth" is accurate. Although many people believe that Al  Gore is trying to possibly gain more political support or enhance his presence and opinions about the current administration in the United States, I think that he is very real about global warming. In the movie Al Gore expressed alot of intrest and passion on his concerns about global warming and the facts. He backed up all of the facts that he had and gave reasonable explanations behind them. While he still had data that that lined up, skeptics could continue to disagree and give false explanations of why global warming isn't occuring.

Having an alternative roof with lighter colors, such as white can actually save energy. The sun reflects off a white roof, while a black roof absorbes heat, which causes you to have to increase the use of your air conditioner. At the same time you are not only improving the quality of your lifestyle and the environment, but you are saving money and using 40% less energy on air conditioning during the summer.

Global warming is a political issue aswell as a moral issue. The only way that humanity will be able to control the effects of global warming and/or stop it is through a political decision, since everything is passed through the court system. Politicians have control over the way that many nations are run, and many of them take certain sides on the issue of global warming, which causes it to be a moral issue. Many people do not support decisions to budget research projects or campaigns to stop global warming only because they do not know the facts.

To me global warming is a big deal because I like the way the world is and I think that snow is just stock. I thought that this movie was pretty factual and Mr. Gore made alot of good points. In the movie there was times that sounded like Mr. Gore was critizing the current administration. And I think he has the right to since the progess to move green has been at a snails pace. So overall I believe that the movie is factuall.
To me I can see hundreds of ways to fix global warming. One to me is why use the space availible to use like put solar panels on your roof they can produce over 3/4 or even more energy than you consume in a year dependind on the amount of sun and how many panels you have. Also Bowling Green is one of the windyist towns in the nation and at my house there is always a 20 mph wind and our family has been looking to put up a small windturbine that could produce all our energy needs. People could also drive diesel cars instead because the burn more effienctly and get better milage. I pearsonally am looking for a diesel and want to make my own fuel called biodiesel witch is used cooking oil and I can produce it for a dollar a gallon and that saves thousands of dollars in fuel cost and the emont of emissions and my truck would need no conversion ulike ethonal but I still support.
Yes I think this can be a global issue and i also think that it can be moral to. Depending on the politions morals will effect wether or not he will support these new ideas and if he is willing to save the enviorment.
-Collin-

I think that the the movie was accurate to what he believed and told us. He did say what he believed and his side of what he thought of global warming, although i have no idea what is facts and what is opinionated.

I think if we all unplugged our electrical appliances while not in use it would save a lot of electricity. When appliances are on standby they are being used needlessly and can take up to 40% of your utility bill. Therefore i think that if we unplug our appliances while we are away from home or not using them we will slow down the effects of global warming.

Yes, i think it is a political issue because the leaders of our country are the people with the most power to say what we should to do help global warming. Also, it's up to people to take steps to slow the process down. If we all work together and do what needs to be done we could help our environment.

-Andrea-

I think the movie was accurate in most of what it siad but you can't completly go by it becasue you have no way of knowing the credibility of some of the statistics in the movie.  I also think it was propaganda because Gore used it to get a message out that he thinks is important but in this case it is good propaganda.

One way to help slow global warming is to pay your bills online.  If every U.S. home switched viewed and paid its bills online the switch would cut solid waste by 1.6 billion tons a year and curb greenhouse-gas emissions by 2.1 million tons a year.  Also you can reduce your corbon dioxide-emitting car trips to the bank on payday, ask your employer to directly deposit your paycheck.

Yes i think that its a political issue because the only people that can make a very dramatic change on it are the ones who write the laws and who have a lot of power changing something.

-Russell-

Mr. Gore has a really good provement for his point of view, he uses a lot of graphics, statistics, pictures and animations, and the move seems to be pretty accurate, but some details are really confusing i think, what  the gobal warming thing has to do with G. Bush? Obviously, it's just criticising his actions. so, since the global warming is used to achive a political goal i don't think the movie is accurate.

When shopping for groceries, bring your own cloth bag to the market. Not using paper grocery bags help saves trees, that absorb carbon dioxide.

If your car has an air conditioner, make sure you recycle its coolant whenever you have it serviced. You can save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide each year by doing this.

Vegetarian food requires much less energy to produce.Enjoying vegetarian meals once or twice a week results in significant CO2 savings.

yes, I think, that nowadays global warming is a political issue, as well as a moral one. Because a lot of politicians talk about global warming and i think, we can really improve the situation when world leaders and political organizations will work together in oder to solve this problem, as well as they work on the terrorism problem or global health.

-Irina

I agree with Irina about Mr. Gore criticizing President Bush too much,  his bitterness wasn't very impressive.

-nicole

I think the facts in the movie were mostly accurate if a little exaggerated, although I know that there are “counter” films about global warming and without seeing those I can’t draw a full conclusion.   It was propaganda because Mr. Gore is trying to spread his ideas to the public and that is the essence of propaganda.

Check your tires weekly to ensure that they’re fully inflated, correct inflation improves gas mileage by more than 3%. Because every gallon of gas saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, every increase in fuel efficiency makes a difference!

Global Warming has become a political issue because politicians have used this issue to gain power and support.  Sadly, few have followed up with their promises to combat global warming.

-nicole

I think for the most part the movie was accurate, I just think some of the things included in the film were unnecessary. One way we can slow global warming is to buy items with less packaging. Reducing your garbage by 10% will reduce your carbon monoxide emissions by 1200 lbs. I think global warming is a political issue because everything we need to do to slow global warming affects the economy. For example, if we drove different cars, we could cut CO2 emissions by a lot. But the companies who produce the other cars would not like it because they would lose a lot of money.

Is the movie accurate? I'm not an expert so I can't and don't want to say it was or wasn't. I all can say is that to me, from it's presentation of the "fact", it seemed more like propaganda then an informational movie about Global Warming. I say it's propaganda because it biased, it uses emotional clips that have absolutely nothing to do with Global Warming, all they do is to acknowledge some evident truths, like we don't know what we had until it's gone. And going along with it being biased, does he know cloud cover, which also affects how many rays can enter the earth, is affected by solar activity, which more closely correlates to rising temperatures??? And the fact that he generalizes all skeptics or he says that non-believers "say this" about global warming, it is so stupid and sneaky I just want to smash the disk. Alot. One way we all can slow Global Warming, which is like trying to slow down molasses, would be to carpool to work, to school, ride your bike (exercise is good).

Global Warming is a human issue. If it is really advancing upon us as fast as Gore says it is, it's probably too late to slow it down. We as a planet would have to decide to trade in technology, our economy, our way of living, for long-term safety. Even though politicians decide bills, it's the people who carry it out. It’s businesses that stop polluting.

    ~~~~~~~~NICK K.
